Berimbolo

Position Details

The berimbolo is a spinning sweep/back take that has revolutionized modern BJJ. From DLR guard, you invert underneath your opponent and spin to take their back.

Key Principles

  • Start with standard DLR grips - ankle control and collar or belt
  • Spin underneath your opponent, inverting your body
  • Use your hooks to control their hips as you rotate
  • Complete the spin to achieve back control

Concepts

  • Inversion: You must be comfortable inverting and spinning underneath
  • Hip Control: Your hooks stay connected to their hips throughout the spin
  • Belt/Pants Grip: Gripping the belt or pants helps pull yourself through
  • Back Take: The goal is back control, not just a sweep
