Basic Butterfly Sweep
Position Details
The basic butterfly sweep is the foundational sweep from butterfly guard. Using your hooks to elevate while controlling the upper body, you can sweep opponents in either direction depending on their weight distribution.
Key Principles
- Maintain good posture - sit up, don't lay back
- Control the upper body with an underhook and head control or collar tie
- Elevate with your hook while falling to that side
- Keep your opponent's weight loaded on you as you sweep
Concepts
- Loading: You must get their weight on your hooks before you can elevate
- Direction: Sweep in the direction of the underhook side
- Hook Elevation: Your butterfly hook lifts them as you fall to the side
- Arm Position: Your arms pull them into you and guide the sweep direction
